Communication Autumn 2026
Posted: Oct 22, 2026 by: Debbie Bagwell (dbagwell) on: Communication Superstars
We have enjoyed a fabulous start to the academic year, Autumn term is a wonderful opportunity to build our communication, interaction and social skills, as we welcome new students to the school, or our class.
For many pupils, returning to school can bring a mixture of excitement and anxiety. New classes, different staff members and changes to routines can feel overwhelming. Taking time to prioritise relationship-building during the first few weeks helps pupils feel safe, valued and ready to learn.
Simple activities that encourage pupils to share their interests, preferences and strengths can help establish common ground. Whether through circle time, collaborative games or creative projects, these opportunities allow young people to get to know one another in a supportive environment.
Communication is at the heart of every relationship. Pupils may use a wide range of communication methods, including speech, symbols, communication aids, signing, gestures and facial expressions.
Creating a communication-rich environment ensures every pupil has a voice and can participate fully in school life. Staff play a crucial role in modelling positive communication by:
- Listening attentively and responding to all forms of communication.
- Providing suitable visual supports and communication tools.
- Encouraging turn-taking in conversations.
- Celebrating every communication success, no matter how small.
- Teaching pupils how to express feelings, opinions and choices.
When pupils feel understood, they are more likely to engage socially and develop confidence in interacting with others.
Friendships provide emotional support, increase self-esteem and contribute significantly to positive mental health. However, developing friendships can be challenging for some pupils who may struggle with social understanding, conversation skills or managing emotions.
We support friendship development by:
- Planning structured social opportunities throughout the day.
- Teaching social skills explicitly through role play and social stories.
- Encouraging shared interests through clubs, lunchtime activities and group projects.
- Recognising and celebrating acts of kindness and teamwork.
Friendships often grow naturally when pupils have opportunities to participate in enjoyable activities together and feel included within our school community.
