Rowan Spring 2 2026

Posted: Mar 20, 2026 by: Debbie Bagwell (dbagwell) on: Rowan Class

As the sunny days roll in, our classroom has been buzzing with excitement, creativity, and plenty of curious minds at work. Here’s a peek into what we’ve been up to lately:

Our English lessons have taken a playful turn as we explored narratives through sensory storytelling. Using The Scarecrows’ Wedding and Errol’s Garden as our inspiration, the children explored narrative structure in a hands‑on, imaginative way. They used Colourful Semantics to build descriptive sentences about the characters and the events in each story, helping them develop clearer, more confident storytelling skills

In maths, we’ve been learning all about shape, time, fractions and numbers. The children have been using real objects, movement and visual supports to help them understand new concepts and build their confidence. It’s been a brilliant way to make maths meaningful, engaging and fun for everyone.

Our budding artists have been creating Aboriginal art. We have really enjoyed creating swirls and patterns with cotton buds and paint whilst listening to Aboriginal music. The children enjoyed looking at different Australian animals to create their amazing patterns.

With the sunny weather giving us a boost, we planted cress seeds and watched them sprout at an impressive speed. As we cared for them, we discovered just how important regular watering is for healthy growth. We also examined real flowers up close and labelled their different parts. The children were fascinated to learn that the colourful petals play a special role in attracting bees and other insects, helping the plant to be pollinated.

We explored rhythm using Djembe drums, experimenting with creating our own beats. The children practised playing slower and faster, as well as changing the volume to make their drumming louder or quieter. It was a brilliant way to build control, coordination, and confidence while having lots of fun

In Geography, we have looked at sensory stories on natural disasters. To bring these ideas to life, we created our own erupting volcanoes, trembling trays to mimic earthquakes, and stormy rainbow bottles to explore how different weather systems behave. These hands‑on experiments helped the children understand big concepts in a fun, memorable way.

It’s been a term full of imagination, exploration, and discovery. The children have truly embraced every subject with enthusiasm. To keep everyone moving and grooving, our pupils continued with their weekly CE, Sensory PE, Hydrotherapy, and PE sessions.

We hope you have enjoyed our blog post and pictures!
